RMI is an independent, nonpartisan nonprofit that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all. We work in the world’s most critical geographies and engage businesses, policymakers, communities, and nongovernmental organizations to identify and scale energy system interventions that will cut climate pollution at least 50 percent by 2030. 

RMI uses Altitude to understand the driving behavior of today’s truck fleets to inform our understanding of future electric truck power needs. For example, an electric truck’s energy needs depend on how many miles it drives in a day and when that driving occurs. We can find the best times to refuel electric trucks by using domiciling behaviors to establish available charging windows. Altitude provides behavioral detail alongside location granularity. The ability to know how trucks are being used, and how that varies depending on where we look, is vital for assessing collective impacts to the power grid as more of these vehicles hit the road. 

We use these data-driven insights to give our audience clarity in the uncertain world of EV load forecasting. Altitude helps us to right-size power demands and support proactive grid investment ahead of truck electrification. Having this geographically specific information is crucial to making sure that grid upgrades are prioritized in the most critical locations. Additionally, we promote the deployment of charging stations in key locations by quantifying where supply would best serve future demand.
