Driving Zero-Emission Freight Through Data

CIMA+, one of Canada’s leading private consulting engineering firms, has partnered with Altitude by Geotab to enhance electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure planning through the application of advanced commercial transportation analytics. This collaboration focuses on optimizing the deployment of EV charging stations to support the decarbonization of medium- and heavy-duty freight transportation within a Canadian province. By leveraging Altitude’s comprehensive data on travel distances, dwell times, and energy consumption, CIMA+ has been able to identify strategic locations for new charging stations, thereby addressing existing gaps in EV infrastructure and facilitating the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

The data-driven approach employed in this partnership has yielded significant insights. For instance, analysis revealed that approximately one-third of Class 3 to 5 vehicles would require supplementary charging stations to complete their daily routes if electrified. This finding underscores the necessity for both public and en route charging solutions to meet operational demands. Furthermore, the study determined that the average energy consumption for these vehicles would be 1.05 kWh/km, with the total energy demand accounting for only 3–5% of the province’s 2019 energy production. Such insights are instrumental in informing infrastructure planning that aligns with both fleet operational needs and energy grid capacities .

By integrating Altitude by Geotab’s mobility analytics, CIMA+ has enhanced its capability to conduct precise grid assessments and develop robust electrification infrastructure plans. This partnership exemplifies how the fusion of engineering expertise and advanced data analytics can drive sustainable transportation solutions, ensuring that infrastructure development keeps pace with the evolving needs of commercial EV fleets.
