Expansion Factors

Comprehensive, reliable traffic volume from transparent methods.

Unlocking the potential of traffic volume insights

With Altitude’s Expansion Factors, you now have access to both 2022 and 2023 traffic volume data, providing a more comprehensive and up-to-date view of vehicle movement across road networks. This update enhances insights for all traffic and segmentation for heavy and medium vehicles, supporting use cases like parking analyses, infrastructure planning, and transportation modeling.

Greater granularity from improved methodology

Get precise, trustworthy and granular traffic volume estimates for the U.S. from 2022 and 2023 using an enhanced model and transparent methodology.

Reliability starts from the source, Altitude is the source of commercial vehicle data from over four million vehicles, offering insights into vehicle class, vocation, fuel type and industry.

Transitioning from TMAS data from 14,000 FHWA directional stations to HPMS AADT data, our new model provides insights for over eight million road segments, including smaller and less trafficked road types.

Our full-disclosure approach allows customers to see how road segment traffic volumes are calculated, verifying our data can be checked, trusted and relied upon.

Gain insights beyond total volume

Tools for filtering and finding critical insights enable accurate planning, estimation and forecasting by prioritizing traffic volume data.

County & state expansion

Support for every state and the majority of counties in the U.S. allows for comprehensive coverage by applying county- and state-level expansion factors. These factors can be applied to various zones at the user’s discretion, including City, TAZ, ZIP, CTR and Custom Zones.

Segmentable traffic volumes

Now includes both 2022 and 2023 data, offering more refined segmentation of traffic volumes by heavy (class 7, 8), medium (class 3-6), and all commercial and non-commercial vehicles, enhancing precision for traffic modeling and forecasting.

Greater road granularity

Offers significantly more coverage than the previous model, providing detailed insights into Motorways, Primary, Trunk, Secondary and Tertiary road segments.

Modeled AADT

Available through the Regional Travel Metrics Module, this API provides road volume metrics with modeled AADT for 2022, along with pre-expanded vehicle miles/kilometers traveled (VMT/VKT). This saves users from performing additional data expansion for traffic volume estimates.

When sampled data alone isn’t enough

Catering to use cases that require a comprehensive understanding of vehicle populations and traffic volumes, with adjustments based on accurate traffic counts.

Support freight planning

Gain access to accurate information that informs better planning decisions. This enhanced capability is supported by granular traffic volume data across various road types, including Motorway, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Trunk segments.

Precision site selection

Make informed decisions based on where your ideal customers will be, not just areas with high traffic. This is achieved by breaking down traffic volumes into market-representative heavy, medium and all commercial and non-commercial vehicles.

Improve road safety

Identify high-risk areas and develop targeted safety interventions to promote safer and more efficient road networks. This involves reliably evaluating safety interventions and prioritizing areas based on traffic volume.

Alternative fuels and charging

Verify that decisions regarding biodiesel, electric, ethanol, hydrogen and other alternative fuel infrastructure are made for maximum use. Analyze truck dwell times and range to choose optimal sites for charging and refueling depots, providing context beyond distance traveled data.

About the Altitude platform

Altitude by Geotab provides reliable and contextualized mobility insights for public and commercial sector decision-makers to gain a complete understanding of movements across road networks.

This enables our customers to achieve improved planning capabilities as well as better financial outcomes, without the challenge of finding trustworthy and usable data sets.

As the primary source and processor of mobility data, we prioritize complete confidentiality and privacy while maintaining the full context of vehicle movements.
